In those last eight months one of the things you learn in England is going to the pub in order to know the culture, is impressive how quickly you can take some traditions as yours when we are talking about drinks.
The first month my brilliant Architect friend Ana and me met a real friend: Stella Artois. Every time I open one Stella can at my place, I couldn’t stop wondering why my five English flatmates was staring at me.
- What´s the matter?- I asked.
-We don’t see very often a girl drinking Stella and even less if this girl is Spanish, only men from the north of England with big bellies take this beer.- They Answered.-
That was my first clue about why the guys didn’t come to talk with Ana and me in pubs.
Well, one afternoon we were in a beautiful typical English pub in Covent Garden, far away from the tourist area. Young guys professionals finish the working day hanging out in the pub, and there weren’t a lot of women around. Ana and me ordered a couple of pints of Stella as usual, after the second round of beer, we started to be worried about if we had forgotten the cologne that morning, trying to explain in a rational way why any men in two miles away didn´t come to talk with us. There was when we realized that the girls there were into the pub they were the perfect English blondes with her manicures perfectly done, holding a glass of wine, and we were the only girls with pints of beers.
If you my dearest reader are looking for catching an English man, well, first thing you should do is order wine in a pub, never ever beer, and even less Stella.
With our ego in pain, the most eccentric, weird, noisy and drunk English men started to talk with us, I am using the word talk as a euphemism of moving the mouth in an frustrated attempt to talk.

- Aren’t you hot?- He asked Ana.- you wear too many clothes.
Ana wore a pull neck jumper, which didn’t allow her to show any part of Ana’s skin.
Here my friends is the other clue why we don’t flirt in the pubs, too much clothes is a sign of not interesting girls.
This story just try to show how difficult is meet a new relationship in a pub, club. Meanwhile the Spanish people see nightlife as the way to find a couple, the English only can see on it the entertainment of one night. The ways to meet new people are closed to, friends of friends, work, gym and the big thing, Internet. At last the half of my friends in England ,go to the web to meet her soul mate, when in Spain we leave this tool for the really shy people. But the Internet relationship deserves another post, another day.
Ana never dumped Stella Artois, and about me, I am more the wine girl type at the moment.

Correction: Men see going to the pub as a way to pick up girls. BUt they first wait until either themselves, or you, are too drunk to tell the difference between a lampost and a taxi cab.
ReplyDeleteAnd relationship doesn't really come into it. They're happy if they can remember your name the next morning.
Romantic nation aren't we. As for the Stella, well, there's no shame in drinking it because you're a girl. There's just shame in drinking it cos its so rubbish!

The best online dating site in my experience would have to be www.globogirls.com It's got members from all over the country, and you can search by general interests, and I've met two as friends, this third one though..WOW! Early days, but we are really hitting it off. She shares my love of backpacking, motorcycle riding and Asian food. It's the best online dating site where you can find someone who likes you for who you really are, not some random pick up site.
ReplyDeleteHi there! Well, i'm a spanish boy living in Ireland. I wanted to just suggest another possibility: that the girl is the one that takes the initiative and goes and talks with the boys... instead of just waiting for hours thinking that if no boy approaches then there's something wrong going on.
ReplyDeleteIn this sense, english girls are far less traditionals, they don´t expect the boy to always do the job. If you like a boy, you can also take the initiative, this way you will have more success in the long run. It is not written on stones that we (the boys) have to be the ones taking the initiative...
Y el post de las relaciones online!? please do it! :D
